Everywhere we turn today there are ads for products to improve our health.  Some are expensive.  Some seem far-fetched.  It can be difficult sorting through all the medical news trying to figure out what works.  You don’t have to go any further.  There is a simple and inexpensive way to really improve your overall health.

By maintaining good oral health, you can enhance your well being.  It is hard to believe that something as simple as brushing and flossing can have a profound impact on your whole body.  Research has shown that daily flossing can add seven years to your life.  How can this be?

The “fuzzy” coating that you feel on your teeth is plaque.  Plaque contains colonies of different bacteria.  As the plaque builds up around the teeth, the bacteria have an effect on the surrounding tissue.  The tissue becomes inflamed, swollen, and red.  Inflammatory proteins are released into your system.  These proteins can affect organ systems which increase your chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.  Also, the bacteria can enter your bloodstream which also increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Good oral hygiene habits such as daily flossing and brushing remove the plaque to break the cycle.  Also, regular exams keep on top of any underlying problems.  Teeth cleanings are important to disrupt the plaque development.

Brushing and flossing may not be as exciting as some of the well being products advertised, but they are effective tools in our battle to keep healthy throughout our lives.
